Glossary

Hashrate
The computational power of mining hardware, measured in hashes per second (H/s). Represents how many attempts your miner makes per second to find a valid block. Common units: TH/s (terahash), PH/s (petahash), EH/s (exahash).
Difficulty
A measure of how hard it is to find a Bitcoin block. The network automatically adjusts difficulty every 2016 blocks (~2 weeks) to maintain a 10-minute average block time. Higher difficulty means more computational work is required.
Lambda (λ)
The expected number of blocks you'll find in a given time period. Calculated as (your hashrate / network hashrate) × (time / 600 seconds). Used in Poisson distribution to calculate probabilities.
Poisson Distribution
A probability distribution that models the number of events (blocks found) in a fixed time period. Perfect for Bitcoin mining because block discovery is a random process with a known average rate.
Expected Value
The average outcome you can expect over many trials. For mining, it's the mean time to find a block. Note: actual results vary significantly - you might find a block much sooner or much later than expected.
Exponential Distribution
A probability distribution that models the time between events in a Poisson process. Used to calculate the probability of finding a block within a specific timeframe. The median time is always 69.3% of the expected time.
